Note taking
Microsoft Corp. is releasing a version of its Office OneNote note-taking program for Apple Inc.’s iPhone as the software maker seeks to increase usage of Office on mobile phones.
The app will be available starting today as a free trial. The company hasn’t decided when and how much it will charge, said Jason Bunge, senior director for Office Product Management, in an interview. It’s the first Office program for the iPhone and the third iPhone application from Microsoft. While Microsoft’s mobile-phone division aims to lure customers to smartphones based on its Windows software and away from the iPhone, units like Office and the Bing Internet search engine are working to boost their user base with versions designed for rival devices. The OneNote iPhone app was developed in response to customer requests and Microsoft is expecting “pretty strong demand for it,” Bunge said. The software will let users take and edit notes on their iPhones and then synchronize them with their personal computers. Mobile users can also insert photographs into the notes.
